Designer Handbag Replicas or Originals?

Designer handbag replicas will fall into one of these categories:

  • A fake is plainly an imitation that is infringing on the original designer’s intellectual property rights. They are tempting, but also against the law. These knockoff bags steal the original’s design, logos, tags, packaging, and most importantly, defraud the consumer who in most cases “thinks” she is buying an original. Counterfeiters also make bags that don’t directly copy logos or other registered designs, but create logos or all over patterns that may at first sight appear to be the original, but are meant to fool an unsuspecting consumer with not much of an eye for detail.

  • A look-alike is an item that is “inspired” by the original, but in no way pretends to be the original. They do not steal the logos, emblems, or registered designs or trademarks of the originals. They do not attempt to fool the consumer into thinking that they are the real thing. In some cases they may infringe on a “registered” design, but this is difficult to prove. Few handbags in the market, if any, actually have a patented design. A general “look and feel” can be imitated without infringing on the original manufacturer's trademarks.

Some women (and men) prefer to buy designer handbag replicas over an original, and do so knowingly. This article is for those of you who do not want to be suckered by the con artists selling them.

Knowledge Rules

Know the Product: Learn as much as possible about the original design before buying. That includes knowing the design, fabric, prints, zipper and pulls, dust bags, labels, logos, serial numbers, hardware, lining, tags, packaging and stitching details. If you’re buying an expensive handbag, the quality should be impeccable. Any suspect detailing should arouse your suspicions. Visit the designer’s own sites to see the styles that they actually make with a given material. Close-up views on the internet are now showing items in great detail, so take advantage of them.

  • Know the Retailer: Knockoff artists are getting better at their trade, so the best advise I can give you is to be careful where you shop. Many, if not all of a designer handbag’s details can be forged. The internet is plagued with peddlers of fake merchandise (with E-Bay leading the way). Look for retailers recommended by the brands themselves. Checking for the website’s information on the origin of their goods, claims of authenticity, return policy and terms and conditions will mean very little if you are dealing with counterfeiters. What would lead you to think that they will respect some legal requirements for e-commerce, while they are breaking other laws? If in doubt, just shop with the recognized sites. You should also be aware that designers do not sell their “seconds”, and you will not find discount tables at high end designer stores. If they ever do discount an item, it is still going to be expensive. Coach is one of the few brands that I know of that actually discounts their products with seasonal changes, but guard against knockoffs by shopping at their own outlet stores.
