The Perfect Handbag
The search for the perfect handbag is as elusive as the one for the perfect jeans.
This is somewhat of a long article, so I hope the following links will help you find the topic you are interested in:
The principles of balance and composition are just as relevant here, and there is no "it" bag that will successfully complement every body type, outfit or occasion.
I’ve been in the business of designing and manufacturing fabrics, bags and other accessories for more than twenty years. Not until my wife and I started this website, however, did I come to understand how much a seemingly whimsical accessory can work to flatter your body type, or work against it.
A great handbag can be the clincher in defining your fashion style as well as the mood of your ensemble. It can be flirty, chic, fun, sophisticated, casual, bohemian, vintage, or cute. We can’t judge cuteness and functionality for every taste. In this article we’ll also steer clear of identifying the latest trends. We’ll just aim to clarify how it is that a handbag can be as flattering to your shape as a perfect pair of jeans. By applying some of the principles outlined below you’ll avoid many expensive mistakes, and you’ll be well on your way to successfully completing your denim outfit.
This is without a doubt the number one consideration, not much of a mystery here. Simply stated, if you are petite, avoid large bags. If you are a large, tall woman, avoid tiny bags. Look for bags that are in proportion to your body! The contrast in size will just make you look smaller or bigger.
The basic shape of the bag should not match your figure. As an example, a woman with a rounder figure should use a rectangular bag. If you are tall and thin, a larger bag with soft corners would be fitting. In general, shapes that are longer than they are wide are more flattering, especially for petite women.
Beware of where the bag falls against your body. This is where eye’s will be drawn to. Bags that hang at the middle of your torso (waist level) are the most universally flattering. If the bag hangs at the hip level, it will attract attention to that area, something you may wish to avoid. If the strap hangs too low, the eye is drawn downwards and you will look shorter. If you are “top heavy” a bag with short straps will attract attention to your torso if you carry it under your arm. In short, a bag that hangs at the widest part of your body will just make you look heavier. Adjustable straps are something to look for, although they just aren’t possible for every strap style.
For those of you who love backpacks, adjust the straps so that it hangs just above your waist line. This not only looks more balanced, it also forces you to keep a better posture. The selection of strap widths is more a matter of comfort. A wider strap distributes weight over a larger area, lessening the discomfort on your shoulders.
Don’t be swayed by the latest trends if they just don’t suit your body or style. Can’t dissuade you? Try renting! I know this sounds strange, it’s a brand new concept. But when you consider that a new bag can set you back two or three hundred dollars, and let’s say you will be using it for 12 months, that bag will be costing you around $20 a month. That’s more or less what it would cost to rent a handbag. Plus, if you rent, you get to change it for another model every month! You’ll never be out of style, your handbags will always look new, and you’ll feel totally free to experiment! To those of you who are easy prey to the allure and artistry of handbags, this is a great way to just get it out of your system. So Why Buy Designer Bags? Just Borrow Them! Bag, Borrow or Steal also sells “gently” used designer bags at worthwhile discounts.
It would be wonderful to find a handbag that could take you from the beach to a fine restaurant, and finally to a chic club. No bag is that versatile. Materials and colors are the determining factors here. Leather is universal, although trendy colors can limit the handbags versatility. The same holds true for bags made from printed fabrics. These can have a very short “lifespan”. Straw bags speak of summer attires. Jacquard fabrics, usually trimmed with leather, were traditionally very elegant, conservative and universal. New trends in design, however, have definitely changed our perception of what can be achieved with jacquard fabrics, and opened a whole new spectrum of possibilities.
Handbags are very visible. Here are some tips to make them work with your outfit:- For one color outfits, a contrasting or complementary colored handbag that matches your other accessories can work very well.
- As with shoes, handbags in neutral colors will be more versatile, as they will go with anything.
- For multicolored or patterned outfits, choose a one color handbag that picks up on one of the colors of the prints.
- Bags should also be tried on for comfort. Get acquainted with how they look and feel under your arm. Find a full length mirror and critically see if it works for you.
- If you’re unsure, resist! Or rent it to get it out of your system.

A handbag is so much more than a simple “carry-all”. At the lower end of the price spectrum, they can be fun and flattering clinchers for your jeans outfit. At the higher price range, they have become true status symbols and can dress-up your jeans for almost any occasion. Choose wisely. Together with your choice of footwear, no other accessory will say more about your personal style and taste. It's also a good idea to learn how to distinguish between originals, fakes and look-likes. This knowledge will not only save you money, it can also help you avoid some potentially embarrassing moments.
