The Teva Sandal
Direct From the Source

The Teva sandal is a new comer to the outdoor footwear industry. Just when you think that there’s nothing new under the sun, along comes a guy and, focusing on solving a problem that he has struggled with, sparks the birth of a whole new category of footwear.

Mark Thatcher was a guide at the Grand Canyon. When growing up, he and his father often hiked the Canyon, and felt an undeniable affinity to the Colorado River. In the 1970’s, while still in college, he worked as a boatman on the River, thoroughly familiarizing himself with all of the rapids between Crystal and Lava Falls.

Clients wearing water-logged tennis shoes were an every day occurance, as was the envy they felt for the flip-flops worn by the guides. At the time, these were the best solution: quick drying but offering little support for the rough hikes up and down the Canyon.

So, with the problem well identified, Mark set out to develop a prototype solution in 1984. The sport sandal was born. At first he sold his limited productions out of his van to friends along the river. The name Teva comes from the Hebrew word for “nature” (Tev-ah).

Demand grew and it was difficult for Mark’s limited production to keep up, so in 1985 he introduced his line to Deckers Outdoor Corporation. A long and successful relationship began, which has taken Teva to hiking and outdoor enthusiasts all over the world.
